About Technoblade:

Technoblade Cover

In 2022, the Minecraft community was shocked and saddened by the passing of popular American You Tuber, Technoblade at the young age of 23, following a year-long battle with cancer.

In just under a decade, Technoblade amassed nearly 11 million YouTube subscribers and 3.7 million Twitter followers. His videos consisted primarily of Minecraft gameplay, particularly on the minigame server Hypixel.

Hypixel Network is a Minecraft minigame server released in 2013 and has grown to be one of the largest active Minecraft servers. The Derry based company, Hypixel was acquired by Los Angeles based Riot Games in April 2020.

Technoblade was one of the first to join one of the Hypixel teams and quickly became a friend.

Following Technoblade’s passing, Hypixel placed a tribute and a virtual book of condolences in the lobby of its Minecraft server. Hundreds of thousands of players from all over the world left messages of condolence and it was clear to see the positive impact that Technoblade had across the globe.

Journey were subsequently approached by Hypixel to work with them to create a number of sets of physically printed books of condolences to present to Technoblades family in San Francisco, along with a set for Riot Games in Los Angeles and Hypixel’s office headquarters in Derry.

Our team of designers and pre-press experts felt passionate about taking on this challenge. There were close to half a million entries into the virtual book of condolences and the first task was to moderate the text, as understandably, emotions were high in a lot of the messages and some text needed to be amended where appropriate. This was done by applying script searches to the data and manually reviewing any flagged messages. When completed we divided the data into 22 volumes with over 22,000 condolences per book.

Technoblade Book Up Close

Using advanced InDesign features, we created a layout style and after much testing, created an automated workflow to import the moderated data, carefully taking into consideration the different languages, characters, emoji’s and typing styles used in the messages, which had to be addressed and resolved where formatting errors occurred.

Hypixel’s vision of transforming a virtual book of condolences into a beautiful, classic set of case bound books was achieved in partnership with PCF print finishing. The inner pages were digitally printed single colour on 80gsm uncoated bond. The book was case bound with lovely Vangard red coloured endpapers and black buckram finished with silver foiled text. Black and Red were Technoblades colours.

Technoblade Presentation

The project is an example of how something that existed only in the virtual reality world gained additional value through the application of traditional print and craft binding. Online is a wonderful way to connect globally, but the tactile nature of print still remains the ideal way to truly connect on a personal level and it was our honour to create such a piece.

About the Bespoke Narnia Christmas Card:

This specially commissioned Christmas card was completely hand painted in-house and converted into digital form for print.

Let’s delve deeper into the intricate details:

The Envelope: The enchantment begins with the envelope, featuring a die-cut shape that captures the essence of Narnia. The hand painted winter scene and iconic characters from the story adorn its exterior, setting the magical tone for what lies inside.

Upon opening, the envelope reveals an inside liner showcasing a wintery mountain scene with Father Christmas flying through the sky. The letter-pressed liner is embellished with a sprinkling of silver-foiled stars, adding a touch of celestial elegance.

The Sleeve: Nestled within the envelope is a bespoke-shaped sleeve, captivating the recipient with an oval aperture window. This window provides a tantalizing glimpse of the contents inside. The sleeve itself is a work of art, intricately printed and foiled on both sides with silver. The sleeve front features an oval frame accentuating the window, adorned with wintery flowers, while the back dazzles with a scattering of beautiful stars against the darkness. At the base of the sleeve, a silver tassel beckons, inviting the recipient to unveil the hidden treasures within.

The Gatefold Card: As the gatefold card is gently pulled from the sleeve by the silver tassel a captivating image is revealed from inside the pocket. The image showcases the iconic lamppost from the Narnia story, adding a touch of nostalgia and wonder. The gatefold card itself portrays a hand painted wardrobe, complete with tiny brass doorknobs, inviting the recipient to embark on a journey into the enchanting world of Narnia.

The Interactive Elements: Opening the wardrobe doors reveals a delightful surprise – the hand painted fur coats hanging inside, intricately printed on sheer vellum. This adds a tactile and visual element, creating a sense of depth and mystery. As the vellum is lifted, a Christmas message is unveiled on the inside of the gatefold, accompanied by hand painted images of Narnia and the majestic Aslan.

We are extremely proud of how this project masterfully weaves together the enchanting elements of Narnia, from the hand painted winter scenes and characters to the iconic lamppost and wardrobe. The use of die-cut shapes, silver foiling, and interactive elements like the vellum overlay adds layers of magic to the Christmas card, making it a truly unforgettable and immersive experience for the recipient.

We look forward to attending the Irish Print Awards at Clontarf Castle on the 26th of April
